Managing literature with Zotero

Zotero is a literature management programme that allows you to record and organise scientific sources and assists you in quoting.
Zotero also allows networking – share found sources with others and jointly create literature collections.

Page contents

Zotero is an open source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. A licence is not required.

Searching and storing literature

Search for literature directly in the Firefox browser and use the Zotero save icon in the address bar to quickly and easily back up literature. Whether full texts or bibliographic information only, Zotero allows you to store various information.

Import literature with the Zotero Connector

Zotero can also be used to search for identifiers such as ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and DOI (Digital Object Identifier). To do this, use the item “Add entry by identifier” in the Zotero menu bar.

Your literature will be saved in “My Library” and then structured in various collections.

Collecting and organising text passages

Use Zotero to create different collections with subfolders. Whether project-related or subject-related – you decide how to organise your entries.

Mark your entries with individual tags (keywords) to find them more quickly in a later search.

Easy quoting

Zotero offers a plugin for Word that allows you to create bibliographies and citations. Sources can be inserted and formatted in Word in continuous text or footnotes. Zotero provides you with a wide range of citation styles.

Creating bibliographies is also very simple with Zotero – create them directly from the browser or use the Word plugin.

Zotero also offers the possibility to prepare a comprehensive bibliography (report).

Synchronising and collaborative working

In Zotero, you can process your collections from different devices – use Zotero synchronisation for this purpose. It is carried out via the Zotero server.

In order to facilitate joint project work, Zotero offers online access (extra registration required). This will allow you to manage your sources and to communicate with other interested parties. For example, create your own group for your fellow students, students or colleagues, join existing groups, or share your collections with others.

Using Zotero

Install the programme Zotero Standalone (for Windows, Mac OS or Linux) and additionally the add-on Zotero Connector (for Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera) to ensure an optimal work environment. The plugin for Microsoft Word is also recommended – this and many other plugins can be downloaded from the Zotero website as well.

After the download, follow the installation wizard instructions.
