We will work together to organise your internship at our university.

  • Start

    As a rule, internships are possible all year round.
    In order to ensure optimum internship planning and organisation, we need a minimum of 8 weeks of lead time from the application to the start of the internship.

  • Application

    ✓ an application letter
    ✓ a curriculum vitae in tabular form
    ✓ a copy of your last school(-leasing) certificate
    ✓ if applicable, copies of other internship or employment references
    ✓ if applicable, other job or performance records

  • Duration

    As a rule, we offer internships of between one week (short internship) and three months (study-integrated internship). The duration of the internship depends on the content and can be agreed upon on an individual basis.

Internships for trainees

Whether you are training to become a media and information services specialist in a public library or in one of the other disciplines, we wil be pleased to give you an insight into the varied activities of our library.

Since it is intended for you to gain many new impressions and experiences during your training-integrated internships, we aim in our facility to make your internship as multifaceted as possible. Wellbeing and a pleasant working atmosphere are also very important factors for us.

You can expect an open-minded an mixed team of around 30 employees, a wide variety of projects and activities, as well as individual support from dedicated professionals. We are pleased to be able to offer you internship support that is tailored to your individual needs and for which you can set your own priorities.

During an internship with us, you have the opportunity to be involved in all the (task) areas of the three HSU library locations. You will gain broad insights into the following areas:

  • acquisition and cataloguing
  • journal office, including
  • electronic media license management and administration
  • subject specialization
  • research and publishing , including the research information system
  • document delivery service (including interlibrary loans)
  • user service and information , consisting of three specialist libraries
  • public relations activities
  • IT infrastructure and EDP

Internships for students

During the practical semester, the Helmut Schmidt University library offers students of librarianship and information sciences an insight into the different activities and tasks of a university library. Since you are paving the way for your own future professional experiences and impressions during these integrated internships, our goal is to make your internship in our facility as varied and future-oriented as possible.

With us, you can expect an open-minded and mixed team of around 30 employees, multifaceted training, as well as individual support from dedicated professionals. We are pleased to be able to offer you internship support that is tailored to your individual needs and for which you can set your own priorities. Wellbeing and a pleasant working atmosphere are also very important factors for us.

Perhaps you already have (specific) ideas about an internship project that you would like to develop here together with us? Is there a particular aspect of the activities of an academic library that has already caught your interest during your studies?

We work together with our trainee graduates to develop an individually tailored training project that builds on the contents of your course of study and combines the theory of this occupational profile with practice.

We offer internships throughout the year for pupils who are exploring career options and would like to learn more about working in a library. We are happy to guide you as you take your first steps into the professional world and give you comprehensive insights into the varied work we do at our library.

  • user service and information
  • acquisition and cataloguing of printed and digital literature
  • the library’s catalog system
  • journal office, including electronic media license management and administration
  • the various types of document delivery
  • public relations activities
  • IT infrastructure and EDP
