We will work together to organise your internship at our university.

Start

As a rule, internships are possible all year round.
In order to ensure optimum internship planning and organisation, we need a minimum of 8 weeks of lead time from the application to the start of the internship.

Duration

As a rule, we offer internships of between one week (short internship) and three months (study-integrated internship). The duration of the internship depends on the content and can be agreed upon on an individual basis.

Internships for trainees

Whether you are training to become a media and information services specialist in a public library or in one of the other disciplines, we wil be pleased to give you an insight into the varied activities of our library.

Since it is intended for you to gain many new impressions and experiences during your training-integrated internships, we aim in our facility to make your internship as multifaceted as possible. Wellbeing and a pleasant working atmosphere are also very important factors for us.

You can expect an open-minded an mixed team of around 30 employees, a wide variety of projects and activities, as well as individual support from dedicated professionals. We are pleased to be able to offer you internship support that is tailored to your individual needs and for which you can set your own priorities.

During an internship with us, you have the opportunity to be involved in all the (task) areas of the three HSU library locations. You will gain broad insights into the following areas:

acquisition and cataloguing
journal office, including
electronic media license management and administration
subject specialization
research and publishing , including the research information system
document delivery service (including interlibrary loans)
user service and information , consisting of three specialist libraries
public relations activities
IT infrastructure and EDP

Internships for students

During the practical semester, the Helmut Schmidt University library offers students of librarianship and information sciences an insight into the different activities and tasks of a university library. Since you are paving the way for your own future professional experiences and impressions during these integrated internships, our goal is to make your internship in our facility as varied and future-oriented as possible.

With us, you can expect an open-minded and mixed team of around 30 employees, multifaceted training, as well as individual support from dedicated professionals. We are pleased to be able to offer you internship support that is tailored to your individual needs and for which you can set your own priorities. We work together with our trainee graduates to develop an individually tailored training project that builds on the contents of your course of study and combines the theory of this occupational profile with practice.

Internships for pupils

We offer internships throughout the year for pupils who are exploring career options and would like to learn more about working in a library. We are happy to guide you as you take your first steps into the professional world and give you comprehensive insights into the varied work we do at our library.

During an internship with us, you have the opportunity to be involved in all the (task) areas of the three HSU library locations. You will gain insights into the following areas:

user service and information
acquisition and cataloguing of printed and digital literature
the library’s catalog system
journal office, including electronic media license management and administration
the various types of document delivery
public relations activities
IT infrastructure and EDP

With us, you can expect an open-minded and mixed team of around 30 employees who will support you as you gather many new impressions and experiences. Our goal is to make your internship at our library as varied as possible. Wellbeing and a pleasant working atmosphere are also very important factors for us.

"Als ich meine Ausbildung begann, wusste ich weder viel über Bibliotheken noch über den Beruf als FaMi. Durch die super Ausbildung wurde mir jedoch alles sehr gut und gründlich beigebracht. Mir wurde jeder einzelne Arbeitsschritt in jeder Abteilung immer gründlich erklärt und ich wurde ermuntert auch Fragen zu stellen. Insgesamt bin ich durch die Ausbildung als Mensch nicht nur gewachsen, sondern auch ein gutes Stück selbstbewusster geworden."

"Im Rahmen meines Praxissemesters verbrachte ich neun Wochen in der Bibliothek der HSU. Am ersten Tag wurde ich sehr herzlich empfangen und erhielt einen sehr detaillierten Plan zum Ablauf des Praktikums. Ich hatte die Möglichkeit alle Abteilungen der Bibliothek zu durchlaufen und konnte jederzeit auch eigene Wünsche einbringen. Jeder Arbeitsschritt wurde mir genau erklärt und ich hatte immer fachlich kompetente Ansprechpartner. Die Arbeitsatmosphäre war sehr angenehm. Es wurde mir immer leicht gemacht, mich in das jeweilige Team zu integrieren. Ein Praktikum an der HSU kann ich jedem wärmstens empfehlen. Die Zeit in der HSU hat mich fachlich und menschlich gestärkt."

"Während meiner Ausbildung zur FaMI habe ich die Chance ergriffen in einem dreiwöchigen Praktikum die Bibliothek der HSU kennenlernen zu dürfen. Ich wurde nicht nur sehr freundlich aufgenommen, sondern gleich in die jeweiligen Teams mit einbezogen und ich konnte Theorie mit Praxis vereinen. Das Recherchieren für Veranstaltungen, Eintauchen in die Fernleihe und die Präsentation der Bibliothek in der Benutzung waren dabei einige der Einblicke, die ich erhalten habe und in denen mir die Mitarbeit besonders viel Spaß gemacht hat. Ich kann die Bibliothek der HSU nur empfehlen, wenn man nach einer praktischen Erfahrung sucht, bei der man seinen Horizont erweitert und gleichzeitig Gelerntes vertieft."

"Ich habe in den letzten drei Wochen im Rahmen eines Schülerpraktikums in der Bibliothek der HSU einiges Neues gelernt und konnte mich auch allgemein weiterbilden. Mir wurde sehr schnell klar, dass meine Vorstellung von den Aufgaben in einer Bibliothek doch ein wenig überholt sind. So ist der Beruf mehr als vielfältig und auch modern. Die digitale Welt bringt einiges Neues und doch wird die Atmosphäre zwischen den Tausenden Büchern bewahrt. Ich würde jedem raten sich einmal umzusehen, denn es gibt weiteraus mehr Tätigkeiten in der Bibliothek als Bücher zu systematisieren. Wenn man sich beispielsweise für IT interessiert, kann man auch hier einiges tun und lernen. Insgesamt war es sehr viel spannender und vielfältiger als ich gedacht hatte. Dabei kam das Menschliche innerhalb der Abteilungen aber nicht zu kurz, so wie auch ein guter Kontakt mit den Studierenden (trotz Corona) stattgefunden hat."

"Während meiner Ausbildung zum Fachangestellten für Medien- und Informationsdienste habe ich alle Abteilungen der Bibliothek kennenlernen dürfen und mich im Rahmen der Ausbildung und des Arbeitsalltags den unterschiedlichsten Aufgaben gewidmet. Im Laufe dieser Zeit wurde mir klar, dass die Tätigkeiten in einer Bibliothek deutlich vielschichtiger sind als zunächst vermutet und ich habe einiges dazugelernt, was mir bei meinem zukünftigen Werdegang helfen wird."

"Ich habe ein dreimonatiges Praktikum im Rahmen meines Praxissemesters an der Bibliothek der HSU absolviert. Was mich im Vorfeld besonders gefreut hat, ist, dass ich die Möglichkeit hatte meinen Praktikumsablauf durch selbstgewählte Schwerpunkte mitbestimmen zu können. Zusätzlich zu meinen Wünschen habe ich jede Abteilung einmal durchlaufen und durfte ein sehr schönes, vielfältiges Praktikum an der HSU absolvieren. Während meiner Praktikumszeit wurde ich in die verschiedenen Teams sehr herzlich integriert und in alle Arbeitsschritte involviert, sodass ich am Ende einen umfassenden Überblick über die Arbeit an der HSU erhalten konnte. Mein Praktikum hat mir sehr viel Spaß gemacht und hat mich menschlich und in Bezug auf mein Studium um einiges weitergebracht. Nachhaltig beeindruckt hat mich, gerade unter den geltenden Corona-Bestimmungen, die umfassende Betreuung an der HSU. Ich wurde vom gesamten Team sehr freundlich aufgenommen und habe mich zu jedem Zeitpunkt ausgezeichnet betreut gefühlt."
