As a central institution of the Helmut Schmidt University/Bundeswehr University Hamburg, we have been providing literature and information for university members engaged in research, teaching and study since 1 October 1973.
We are also the only major academic library in the Wandsbek district to provide assistance free-of-charge to users from the Hamburg city area and neighbouring Schleswig-Holstein. As we are located in a restricted military area, visitors must be over the age of 18 and have valid identification documents.
Our comprehensive analogue and digital holdings primarily reflect the university’s range of subjects. Nearly all of our printed works are systematically organised and freely accessible at three locations in the building.
For access at any time and from any location, our acquisition profile is geared towards the e-preferred principle, which makes our online collection one of the most comprehensive in Northern Germany.
In addition, we have more than 30,000 volumes with military-historical content.
We can acquire academic literature which is not in our stock nationally or worldwide through interlibrary loans. Our library is a member of the subito document delivery service and participates in OCLC Worldshare.
The openHSU research information system provides records of and access to publications from our university.
To maximise your experience in our library, we offer individual workstations and group study areas for academic work. Our group work rooms also have the technical equipment for digital meetings.
As part of a differentiated training programme, we provide our students with media and information skills that are tailored to their needs. The library offers a wide range of support to university members, from chat information and individual counselling sessions to courses integrated into the curriculum.
The library’s high-profile exhibitions mostly specialise in regional history.
